“In Grayson, Louisiana, I got a haircut from Ray in the barbershop he’d owned since 1950. I remember him telling some colorful stories, some of which my New England ears had trouble understanding through his Louisiana accent and the noise from the clippers. But he did touch on the subject of race relations in the area, particularly in the larger city of Monroe which had recently elected a black mayor.”
