Ian McGaughey provided these comments about his visit to Brule, Nebraska during the making the 2002 road trip documentary “Looking At America.” This still image is taken from the video.
“My paternal grandfather was born in Big Springs, Nebraska in 1914. There isn’t much to see there, so after a quick stop I headed to nearby Brule for breakfast. There I met Ralph, who had an amazing story to tell. He had been on a reconnaissance flight over Hiroshima, Japan on the morning of August 6, 1945, minutes before the Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb on the city. His warning that one day the US will see that kind of destruction on its own shores is chilling.”
